A SONG FOR THE EARTH
1 Prayer to the Clouds
Oh clouds, come down
As unceasing shower:
The Earth lies parched
for want of water:
The trees are withered
They stretch out their tongues for water,
Hot winds are blowing
Everywhere, men run up here and there.
Incline to our pleas, Oh wind,
Come down in a long shower
And end the woes of the Earth.
2 . Clouds responds
We are not without mercy
We have the desire to come down
On the Earth
As a soothing long shower
that will save the Earth from the hot spell,
and to save her from the agony.
What you are seeing here
We are not rain - clouds.
We are only a lump of dust!
If the wind blows
The clouds gather water particles
And we will become rain-clouds .
Then only the shower occurs
What can we do?
We are helpless!
If only the wind blows,
We can do as your pray for.
3.Prayer to the wind
We the people whose
Very breath you are,
You merciful wind
Why have you become hostile to the Earth!
Do you not see the abysmal
condition of the Earth
And all creatures thereon?
Don’t you behold everything?
Oh wind, the friend of the seas
You are the embodiment of love.
Why don’t you have mercy on us?
We are beleaguered and bemoaned.
You please blow strongly
And mingle with the clouds.
Let the clouds pour down
On the Earth to make her happy.
4. The wind Respond
Stay high the continents seven
as seven cliffs amidst the oceans
“The Earth” She has the fortitude
to face all vicissitudes.
She can weather any storms.
She is daughter to the oceans
She who nurtures green and verdant lands
and who retain as an eternal spring
is none but a sister to me
For you, She is the Mother indeed.
By hugging her with his own rays
And treating her with vital power
The sun keeps her as if wife
Distance never deters him
From being so near to her!
Turn to him, your father he is
share with him, your grievances.
He may not be without remedy
for your problems, Let him think. 5.Prayer to the Sun
Oh Sun, You who illuminates
the world, You who wield
the power to destroy ,
You who the provider of the light,
And the dispeller of all darkness;
We are helpless! We can’t bear
the warmth of your rays.
Unless You shower your kindness
Oh Sun,we no more will be here on Earth.
6.The Sun Responds
No no, it is not my hot
but the sigh of Earth!
A wind blow, it is far from reach
unless and until her heart is cooled
You depredators! Go and beg for pardon
Mother Earth! She is Sarvamsaha
She is always merciful
Surely She will forgive you.
7. Man’s introspection.
Yes, we have harmed the Earth
We tilled and dug her bosom,
As and when we were nomads
we wandered here and there
Once a nomad planted plantain
Mother Earth gave him plantain fruits
We from then on started farming.
When we dug and dug the Earth
We found the water pure!
By cutting trees and plants
We cleared forest lands
We built houses, walls and gates
and constructed granaries
Then we tamed those animals wild
The weights of labour shouldered down
Then we invented devices
to reduce toil and moil
We built factories, and we
advanced tools and machines.
We flattened high hills,
built high – rise buildings there;
From the bowels of the Earth
we mined the iron ore
and made deadly weapons;
From the depth of seas and oceans
extracted gases and oils;
Thus we exploited the Earth
In all conceivable ways.
We made the Earth and Ether
Our play ground,
Conquered even other planets!
Now disillusioned as we are
We know this well.
We see the present woes of the Earth
are the outcome of our waywardness.
We can realize all those mistakes
Let us regret, we are helpless!!
8.Confession to the Earth
Oh Mother, forgive us
we are your children dear!
We wronged you
made disconsolate,
now we know in our delusions.
Oh Mother, forgive us
We are your children dear!
9.There after
There was a change everywhere,
In the Southern sea
the wind raged high,
In the North, the Himalayas
sent forth the spring
Wind blew in the western ghat
The clouds mingled with the wind,
the rain bird Vezhambal
fluttered it’s wings and
sat on the high branch of a tree,
The peacock started it’s proverbial dance
The frogs cried aloud.
Without the frightening thunder or lightnings
Without the frightening thunder or lightnings
The rain began to pour down on the Earth!
Mother Earth remained composed
And really got contented!!
